4.18 Industry Establishments & Employees Analysis

This analysis of electrical contractor businesses in Cuyahoga County has three parts. The first part is the total number of establishments in the County. The second part

deals with the total number of employees for electrical contractor businesses in the County and finally the third part of this analysis is the average number of employees
  1. per electrical contractor business establishment in the County.
  2. We see that in the decade from 2003 through 2012 the total number of electrical contractor establishments in Cuyahoga County actual decreased from 222 in 2003 to
190 establishments in 2012. This represents a 14.4% decline over the decade. We think that this is a net positive for Andy and Joe of since it reduces the total number of

electrical contractors who are competing for the same business. In the second part of the analysis we find that the total number of employees working in electrical contractor establishments in Cuyahoga County also decreased in the same

time period of 2003 to 2012 by 15.1%. In terms of hard numbers there were 3,759 employees working in electrical contractor establishments in 2003 and by 2012 that number

had dropped down to just 3,191. Actually in 2010 it had dropped down to as much as 2,776 employees and thus there has actually been a pick up in employees working in electrical contractor establishments in 2011 and 2012. A decline of available talent is not always a good thing since it could result in a labor shortage for the industry. The final analysis of the average number of employees per establishment shows in 2003 there were an average of 16.93 employees in each electrical contractor establishment

in Cuyahoga County. That number dropped all the way to 14.04 in 2011 before picking up in 2012 all the way back up to 16.93. There reason there are so many employees

in each electrical contractor business is because the larger firms tend to employ many part time electricians and apprentices and also sub out many jobs to smaller firms. This tends to skew the numbers off quite a bit. Typically small electrical contractor operations tend to have less than 5 employees. Also these numbers tend to include large electrical equipment supply firms in the data which also throws off the data somewhat.
