4.10 Target Market Business Establishments by Industry Analysis
In this analysis we look at the number of business establishments by industry for the County of Mecklenburg County and compare that to similar data for the State of North Carolina.The purpose of this analysis is to get a sense of just what is the economic landscape of the County when compared to the State and what conclusions if any we can draw from the data.
The industry groups that the various business establishments are broken down into are:

There are some stark differences between the target market of Mecklenburg County and the State of North Carolina when we compare the business establishments by the various industries:
- Of all the business establishments in the County only 10% are in the construction and manufacturing compared to 14% for the State of North Carolina.
- Retail trade establishments in Mecklenburg County are 12% of all establishments as compared to 16% statewide. This is especially interesting when you consider the fact that the County has a much higher retails sales per capital than the State.
- 14% of all business establishments in the County are from the Finance, Insurance & Real estate industries as compared with only 11% statewide.
- Professional services establishments form 16% of all business establishments in the County compared to only 11% statewide.
The conclusions that can be drawn from this analysis when combined with the education analysis conducted earlier, is that the workforce in Mecklenburg County is much more educated than in the State of North Carolina. This highly educated workforce tends to find employment opportunities in industries that require that higher education, skill and training like professional services, finance, insurance and real estate.
